It seems that many people feel that the success of Bush’s new strategy in Iraq depends on PM al-Maliki’s ability to crack down on the insurgency. As noted in One Last Shot, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama want to cap the number of troops because (1) they believe that Bush’s new strategy has been tried and failed in the past and (2) that PM Nouri al-Maliki doesn’t have what it takes to win.
2008 presidential hopeful George Pataki recently visited Georgetown University to deliver a speech titled “A Way Forward in Iraq.”
Here are a few excerpts from Pataki’s speech taken from the Wall Street Journal: “I don’t think there is anyone who has said that what we have to do is hold the Maliki government’s feet to the fire,” Pataki said. “Let’s make them take the actions that they can take [toward a stable government].”
“You have people now saying ‘No, no surge.’ You have some saying, ‘Yes, the surge is a solution.’ I’m saying: the surge if. And the ‘if’ is that the surge … is to achieve the broader goal of a stable, representative Iraqi government — yes, if in fact that government is a partner, and more than just a wordsmith partner but to the extent it is a capable and effective partner in achieving that goal. We can’t make the Iraqi institutions of government function. We can help them to have a climate where they can make them function.”
It seems that many people are very skeptical about the Prime Minister’s ability to pull this off.
What do you think? Does Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki have the ability to bring stability to Iraq?
Perhaps the following article, videos, audio feed, and transcript will inspire faith in the man.

According to CNN, Barack Obama stated, “The time has come for universal health care in America, … I am absolutely determined that by the end of the first term of the next president, we should have universal health care in this country …”
Although Obama and Romney want to make health care accessible for all American’s. According to https://www.mittromney.com Mitt states that “[t]he health of our nation can be improved by extending health insurance to all Americans, not through a government program or new taxes, but through market reforms. … We can’t have as a nation 40 million people — or, in my state, half a million — saying, ‘I don’t have insurance, and if I get sick, I want someone else to pay. … It’s a conservative idea … individuals have responsibility for their own health care. I think it appeals to people on both sides of the aisle: insurance for everyone without a tax increase.”
So what do you think? Is health care a Democratic issue or a Republican issue or an American issue?

Mitt Romney released a statement on January 22, 2007 regarding the 34th anniversary of Roe v. Wade and the March for Life.
“Across this nation, thousands of Americans are gathering in their local communities and in our nation’s capital to reaffirm their dedication to protecting the sanctity of life. We must create a culture of life where the weakest and most innocent among us are protected.”
“While there are well-meaning people on both sides of this debate, no one can deny that when hundreds of thousands of abortions are performed every year, it should be a major concern for a nation as great as ours. If we commit ourselves to promoting a culture of life, I believe that one day our nation’s laws may reflect what is in our hearts.” See https://www.mittromney.com.

Below is Mitt’s reaction to President Bush’s State of the Union Address which was given on January 23, 2007:
“We are blessed to live in a country with the best medical system in the world. However, for too many, private health insurance is often out of reach. I welcome President Bush’s proposed initiatives to make health insurance more available and affordable. He recognizes the answer is not more government but more innovation, harnessing the power of free market reforms.
“I am especially encouraged by the President’s initiative to help states find new solutions for individuals to buy health insurance. I believe the states are our best laboratories to find the best policy innovations to our health insurance crisis. As Governor, my state found a way to get all of our citizens covered without a tax increase and without a big government takeover.” See https://www.mittromney.com.

John McCain has produced an early draft of another Iraq resolution. According to CNN, the new resolution “[w]hile acknowledging that past mistakes in U.S. strategy have led to a dire security situation in Iraq, it presents 11 different political, economic, and military benchmarks the Iraqi government ‘must make visible, concrete progress toward meeting.’”
“The benchmarks include: taking over security in all provinces in a timely manner; disarming militias and ensuring security forces are accountable to the central government; distributing oil profits to all Iraqis in an equitable manner; conducting provincial elections; and ensuring that billions of dollars in reconstruction funds are distributed to Sunni neighborhoods in Baghdad and the largely Sunni Anbar Province.”
“The resolution does not enumerate any consequences if the benchmarks are not met. It says only that “f the Iraqi government does not follow through on its promises, it will lose the support of the American people and the people of Iraq.”
“The resolution might be a way of calming the concerns that many of our colleagues have by establishing specific benchmarks and increasing congressional oversight, McCain explained Thursday.”

So what do you think? Are all of these resolutions just political cover or do they represent a sincere attempt by our leaders to help make a difference in Iraq?

Here are excerpts from a great article on electromneyin2008.com.
WHAT’S JOHN McCain thinking?
“He has Mitt on the mind,” said a Romney campaign consultant who requested anonymity.
“Mitt on the mind” is code for worrying that conservatives will ultimately desert Senator McCain for Romney in New Hampshire and across the country.
“Mitt on the mind” also explains why Rob Gray is now on board McCain’s presidential exploratory committee as New England political strategist. Gray worked on Romney’s 2002 gubernatorial campaign and knows well his record of conversion from moderate to hard-core conservative. Gray also relishes political hardball, although his latest effort amounted to an embarrassing whiff.
Gray played a critical role in Kerry Healey’s losing 2006 campaign to become governor of Massachusetts. In that case, Gray took a moderate Republican with potential appeal to female and independent voters and turned her into a candidate with little appeal beyond a narrow conservative base. …

Two big hitters join Romney’s presidential exploratory committee:
(1) Representative Peter Hoekstra from Michigan (on the House Intelligence Committee)
(2) Former Speaker of the House, Representative Dennis Hastert, a Republican from Illinois.
Furthermore, according to http://www.eyeon08.com, “Romney’s playing DC … well!
“Mitt Romney is running an insider campaign in Washington, and this has a bunch of interesting implications. … First, let’s look at the dynamics. DC is very conventional-wisdom and money oriented. Therefore, DC money goes to the frontrunner or frontrunners. In addition, I would argue that McCain’s positions — and ways of expressing them — on campaign finance reform, pork, and ethics reform have all significantly alienated a number of lobbyists and (self-imagined?) kingmakers in Washington. In general, Washington could well be more anti-McCain than the rest of the country. …”
“Now look at Romney’s House people. First, there is Hastert, who, Matt Lewis has pointed out, has hated McCain for a long time. Romney will acquire a lot of support for that reason. Second, he has Jim McCrery, the ranking member on the Ways and Means Committee. In that position, McCrery is the House GOP’s Deputy Earmarker-in-Chief, behind Jerry Lewis. In general, many of the people on the “powerful” … exclusive committees will end up with Romney. I would use a similar analysis with Rep. Dave Camp. … Other significant pickups have personal connections of some sort such as Tom Feeney (was Jeb Bush’s 1994 running mate and a significant part of the Jeb Bush operation appears to be lining up with Romney) and Buck McKeon (a fellow Mormon).”

2008 candidates are pounding the pavement hard this weekend. Here’s a few of the candidates’ stops:
Rudy Giuliani spoke to local businesses at a dinner in New Hampshire. Hillary Clinton made several stops in Iowa. Pataki visited Georgetown University to deliver a speech titled “A Way Forward in Iraq.” See CNN for more details on other 2008 candidates.
Romney hit the campaign trail too. This weekend he and his son Tagg headed “to Iowa Friday to attend a luncheon with GOP activists in Waterloo, before he tours a renewable energy plant in Fairbank. The Massachusetts Republican heads to Washington, DC Saturday to deliver a keynote address at the National Review Institute’s Conservative Summit.” Click here for pictures of his visit.
By the way, did you know that Tagg Romney is going to be the L.A. Dodgers’ new marketing officer? Click here and here for more information.
