One Last Shot?

January 21, 2007

Even though Nancy Pelosi and John Kerry were for increasing troop levels in Iraq during the 2004 campaign, like many other Democrats they are now opposed to President Bush’s proposal to do so. In fact earlier this week Sen. Clinton stated that President Bush has it all backwards in Iraq and Afghanistan. She thinks we need to increase troop levels in Afghanistan and decrease (redeploy) them in Iraq. Furthermore, Sen. Clinton, Sen. Obama and other Democrats want to formally cap the level of troops in Iraq. Simply put, Sen. Obama called the idea of sending more troops to Iraq a tried and failed policy.” In addition, according to CNN, members of Congress (namely Biden-Levin-Hagel and Collins-Warner-Nelson) are drafting resolutions to show their disapproval of the President’s new plan. John Edwards and Tom Vilsack have taken it a step further and have called on Congress to cut funding and start removing troops now.

In an interview with CNN Sen. Clinton, I think, revealed why she and others so vehemently oppose the increase in troop levels. When asked whether she had faith in Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki she replied that “she doesn’t ‘have any faith’ in the embattled prime minister and questioned his motivations. ‘Whether there’s a gap between his intentions and his will and capacity is the real problem, or whether he’s doing what he intends to do to mark time and further the dominance of his sectarian supporters — it’s hard to tell.’”

On the other hand, “[s]peaking in support of a House bill proposing to prohibit Congress from cutting off funding for the Iraq war, Minority Whip Roy Blunt said Thursday critics of President Bush’s plan to increase troop levels in Iraq ‘don’t want to do what it takes to win.’ ‘Those who are not supporting the president’s current effort really have an obligation, in my view, to come up with their own plan and we’re not hearing that.’ ‘We’re seeing politicians in Washington who really want to have it both ways, they don’t want to support the current plan, but they don’t have a plan of their own.’ ‘They don’t want to lose, but they don’t want to do what it takes to win,’ he added.”

So what do you think? Do we throw in the towel and call it quits or give it one last shot?

I think Mitt Romney’s position is clear. Click here to listen to Mitt’s response to questions about the war in Iraq that Mike Gallagher asked him during an interview this week.

Idahoans, Al Gore is Coming to Town January 22, 2007

January 15, 2007

According to www.ktvb.com “Tickets for former Vice President Al Gore’s Jan. 22 speech at the Taco Bell Arena sold out by 3 p.m., the first day they became available. A total of 10,000 seats were available for the address. Of those, 785 went to Boise State University students, and the Frank Church Institute has set aside 2,000 student tickets for when students return to class next week.”

It will be interesting to hear what Al has to say. If anyone has a recording or transcript of his speech please let me know.

I wonder if we’ll see him face off against Mitt during the first Presidential Debates in April.

Mitt Romney’s Father Grew up in Idaho

January 15, 2007

According to deseretnews and www.utahnsformitt.com Jon Huntsman said “his late father-in-law, Elder David B. Haight, who was a member of the LDS Church’s Quorum of the Twelve, grew up in Idaho (Oakley) with Romney’s late father, former Michigan Gov. George Romney.”

“Romney’s father and mother were family friends for half a century, Huntsman said. ‘They were almost like my own parents,’ he said, adding he was one of the earliest supporters of George Romney’s brief presidential bid in 1972.’”

Ann Romney, The Ideal First Lady

January 15, 2007

Like many of the First Ladies in the past, Ann Romney has a certain modest yet noble character that I believe resonates with Americans.

Ann Davies Romney was born on 1949, married Mitt in 1969, and has had five sons. As the First Lady of Massachusetts, she has volunteered to work with the New England Chapter of the MS Society, a disease she was diagnosed with in 1998. While Mitt was Governor, Ann served as a co-chair of the Faith and Action Committee, a committee aimed to bring churches together to help serve young people. She has also served on other boards that focus on education, athletics, women’s cancer, community service, and improving the lives of our nation’s youth (just to mention a few). Above all, she is a woman of faith, a mother of love, and a wife of unfailing support.

What do you think, is Ann Mitt’s secret weapon?

First Presidential Debates Coming in April

January 15, 2007

According to www.blog.edlectromneyin2008.com and www.cnn.com on April 4 and 5, Mitt Romney and the other Presidential candidates will get their first crack at explaining to America why they should be the next President of the United States.

“CNN’s Wolf Blitzer will moderate the debates with questions coming from WMUR’s Scott Spradling and Union Leader’s John DiStaso. WMUR’s Jennifer Vaughn will be moderating questions from the audience. The debate will be televised live nationally on CNN and throughout New Hampshire on WMUR.”

“’We are thrilled to provide our viewers with the information to make the most informed decision possible when they are voting in their presidential primaries or caucusing,’ said CNN/U.S. president Jon Klein.”

“New Hampshire, a crucial proving ground for 2008 candidates, will be the first state to cast votes in the Republican and Democratic presidential primaries. Republican and Democratic candidates have been visiting the Granite State since the conclusion of the 2004 presidential election in an effort to woo these influential voters in 2008.”

“’We think it only makes sense that the state with the first-in-the-nation primary also has the first-in-the-nation presidential debate,’ said Jeff Bartlett, WMUR general manager. ‘Many candidates and potential candidates have already made numerous trips to New Hampshire, and we felt that April would be a good time for the voters here to get their first impression about how the candidates stack up against one another.’”

“Joseph W. McQuaid, president and publisher of the Union Leader, said, ‘The issues facing the next administration are as crucial as they have ever been for this country. It is not too early for the first primary state to present a forum to explore the views and the competence of serious candidates.’”

Spending, A National Crisis & Mitt, A Problem-Solver

January 9, 2007

Idahoans and all Americans have a call to action. We are facing a record $8.6 trillion debt (which is equivalent to $28,855.41 a person). We must get control of our entitlement programs and irresponsible spending. We need a president who is experienced at turning around failing organizations and governments. Mitt Romney is such a man.

How will Mitt save America from the economic crisis we are in? First, he will not raise taxes. According to www.newsbull.com on January 3, 2006, Mitt Romney signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge. In so doing he promised the American people that he would “(1) oppose any and all efforts to increase the marginal income tax rates for individuals and/or businesses; and (2) oppose any net reduction or elimination of deductions and credits, unless matched dollar for dollar by further reducing tax rates.”

Second, he will not barrow more money.

So if Mitt won’t raise taxes or barrow more money, how on earth can he eliminate the debt.

Americans can look to what Mitt did in the past to see what he will do in the future. For example, as Governor of Massachusetts he eliminated a 3 billion deficit. According to wikipedia in 2003 Mitt worked with the state legislature to cut spending, eliminate waste and duplication, and restructure the state government.

More specifically, an “unexpected windfall in capital gains taxes reduced the deficit by $1.3 billion, and Romney raised an extra $500 million in revenue by increasing hundreds of fees (such as driver’s license and marriage license fees) and by closing tax “loopholes.” The state also cut spending by $1.6 billion, including $700 million in reductions in state aid to cities and towns. In response, cities and towns became more reliant on local revenue to pay for municipal services and schools.”

As a result, “Massachusetts finished 2004 with a $700 million surplus and 2005 with a $500 million surplus”, all without raising taxes or barrowing more money.

“In 2006, the Massachusetts legislature approved a budget that required spending $450 million from the rainy day fund. Even though the state had collected a record-breaking amount of tax revenue in the fiscal year . . . Romney vetoed the transfer of funds . . . . ‘One of the primary responsibilities of government is keeping the books balanced,’ said Romney ‘The problem here is not revenues; the problem is overspending. The level of spending which we’re looking at would put us on the same road to financial crisis and ruin that our commonwealth has been down before.’”

America needs a president who is tough on spending and smart on solutions. We need a president who can pull smart people together and fix problems. America need Mitt Romney. Mitt Raises $6.5 Million On First Day

January 8, 2007

According to CNN, “White House hopeful Mitt Romney and 400 of his backers raised more than $6.5 million on Monday in a … fundraising blitz that will force all Republican rivals to take notice.”

“‘They’ve come together and blown us away today, and humbled us at the same time,’ said the former Massachusetts governor as he clutched the hand of his wife, Ann. The figure dwarfed the $2 million that Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, raised and the $1 million collected by former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.”

Way to go Mitt!
