Look at the Record

February 20, 2007

Thanks to a fellow Mitt supporter, Charles Mitchell, at www.evangelicalsformitt.org for the following:

“McCain has been all over the board on issues. Yes, it is true that Romney’s political policy on abortion has changed. However, as Grover Norquistthe, head of Americans for Tax Reform, writes, ‘Romney has a one-way, one-time migration on abortion to explain. … Senator McCain, meanwhile, was a Reaganite on taxes and then drifted for six years and now wants to come back. Same on guns. Same on judges. He was a two-way migration on several issues, and a lot of conservatives will have a hard time with that.’

Mitt, on the other hand, “has undertaken a wealth of pro-life actions in public life, including supporting abstinence education and vetoing bills to expand access to abortifacient pills and to publicly funded stem cell research.”

It seems clear that, when looking at the record, Mitt has been an advocate for life.

John McCain’s Iraq Resolution

January 28, 2007

John McCain has produced an early draft of another Iraq resolution. According to CNN, the new resolution “[w]hile acknowledging that past mistakes in U.S. strategy have led to a dire security situation in Iraq, it presents 11 different political, economic, and military benchmarks the Iraqi government ‘must make visible, concrete progress toward meeting.’”

“The benchmarks include: taking over security in all provinces in a timely manner; disarming militias and ensuring security forces are accountable to the central government; distributing oil profits to all Iraqis in an equitable manner; conducting provincial elections; and ensuring that billions of dollars in reconstruction funds are distributed to Sunni neighborhoods in Baghdad and the largely Sunni Anbar Province.”

“The resolution does not enumerate any consequences if the benchmarks are not met. It says only that “f the Iraqi government does not follow through on its promises, it will lose the support of the American people and the people of Iraq.”

“The resolution might be a way of calming the concerns that many of our colleagues have by establishing specific benchmarks and increasing congressional oversight, McCain explained Thursday.”

Click here to view the full draft.

So what do you think? Are all of these resolutions just political cover or do they represent a sincere attempt by our leaders to help make a difference in Iraq?

McCain’s Got Mitt on His Mind

January 28, 2007

Here are excerpts from a great article on electromneyin2008.com.

WHAT’S JOHN McCain thinking?

“He has Mitt on the mind,” said a Romney campaign consultant who requested anonymity.

“Mitt on the mind” is code for worrying that conservatives will ultimately desert Senator McCain for Romney in New Hampshire and across the country.

“Mitt on the mind” also explains why Rob Gray is now on board McCain’s presidential exploratory committee as New England political strategist. Gray worked on Romney’s 2002 gubernatorial campaign and knows well his record of conversion from moderate to hard-core conservative. Gray also relishes political hardball, although his latest effort amounted to an embarrassing whiff.

Gray played a critical role in Kerry Healey’s losing 2006 campaign to become governor of Massachusetts. In that case, Gray took a moderate Republican with potential appeal to female and independent voters and turned her into a candidate with little appeal beyond a narrow conservative base. …

Mitt on the Move

January 21, 2007

This week has been a killer week for Mitt Romney. For example, a straw poll in Arizona shows Romney ahead of John McCain. Furthermore, recent statements made by Rudy Giuliani cast doubt on whether he is really serious about running for the presidency. According to hotlineblog, Rudy stated “I think the biggest question you have to ask is, ‘Can you really lead the country?’ If I believe that I can do it, then I will, and if I don’t, then I’ll support somebody else.” Mitt’s Republican rivals seem to be lossing ground. For more information see article6blog.com.

Like usual, Mitt also recruited more key players for his presidential exploratory team. According to CNN, “Mitt Romney ventured to Capitol Hill Thursday to meet with a group of about 40 House Republicans. The former Massachusetts governor was invited to address the House GOP ‘theme team,’ chaired by Rep. Jack Kingston of Georgia. Romney addressed a range of issues, including how he will handle questions about his membership in the Mormon Church on the campaign trail. On the issue of his religion, Romney ‘said that people of America want a person who’s going to be a person of faith, regardless of their religion,’ Rep. Tom Price of Georgia told CNN.”

“Romney cited several conservative religious leaders who agreed that faith would be an important issue in 2008, including Franklin Graham, Pat Robertson and Gary Bauer, he added. Price, who has not formally endorsed a candidate yet, said he was impressed by Romney. ‘He brings a kind of optimism and enthusiasm that our party needs,’ Price said.”

Mitt’s visit to Washington paid off. According to CNN, Romney recruited 16 RNC members to be part of his presidential exploratory committee. He stated, “In our Party and in their respective states, these men and women will be tireless advocates for our common ideals of lowering taxes, curbing runaway spending, promoting traditional values, and providing for a strong national defense. . . . In just two weeks, we have put together a strong team united by an optimistic vision for the future and motivated to go forward.”

The list of supporters included:

    -Cindy Costa, South Carolina
    -Darrell Crate, Massachusetts
    -David Norcross, New Jersey
    -Donna Gosney, West Virginia
    -Jody Dow, Massachusetts
    -June Hartley, Oregon
    -Louis Pope, Maryland
    -Lynn Windel, Oklahoma
    -Peter Cianchette, Maine
    -Robert Manning, Rhode Island
    -Ron Kaufman, Massachusetts
    -Sara Gear Boyd, Vermont
    -Solomon Yue, Oregon
    -Tom Rath, New Hampshire
    -Tony Parker, District of Columbia
    -Vance Day, Oregon

According to our friends at reason4romney.blogspot.com Anne Coulter supports Mitt too. Evidentially “on Hannity and Colmes … [she] threw her support to Mitt Romney for President. When asked who she likes for President either McCain, Gulliani or Romney, she responded Romney twice. This appears to be the trend among most ‘common sense conservatives.’ They are recognizing that Mitt Romney is the only capable and qualified candidate for 1600 Pennsylvania Blvd. Mitt’s positive vision is resonating with the Reagan generation.”

By the way, does anyone have a master list of who’s on Mitt’s team?

There were also several complementary articles about Mitt. One US News’ article was titled “Romney Is on the Fast Track.” It states that “Mitt Romney appears to be forming his campaign operation faster than planned. White House and GOP leadership officials noted today that Romney’s wave of appointments and listing of backers is a sign that he’s pushing up plans to forcefully challenge Sen. John McCain.”

“Just today, for example, he brought on former National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Carl Forti as political director. Romney’s ability to raise millions in donations has also sparked a new interest in his campaign as proof that it will be able to compete with McCain and other likely candidates. Campaign insiders say that the effort is coming together fast, in part because Romney is running the operation out of Boston and that has led to a family feeling in the office.”

“The fact that joining this shop requires a move to Boston is actually an advantage,” says one insider. “It requires a personal and professional investment that yields a valuable return for Governor Romney. There’s a greater sense of teamwork and commitment because of it.”

Another US News article was titled “The Romney Buzz is Back.” The article stated that “[w]hat GOP political analysts say he brings to the table is a fresh face and a track record of accomplishment, not just in the Bay State but also as the chief exec at the 2002 Olympics. He’s also handsome and articulate.” For more information see georgiansforromney.blogspot.com.

Mitt Raises $6.5 Million On First Day

January 8, 2007

According to CNN, “White House hopeful Mitt Romney and 400 of his backers raised more than $6.5 million on Monday in a … fundraising blitz that will force all Republican rivals to take notice.”

“‘They’ve come together and blown us away today, and humbled us at the same time,’ said the former Massachusetts governor as he clutched the hand of his wife, Ann. The figure dwarfed the $2 million that Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, raised and the $1 million collected by former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.”

Way to go Mitt!

Romney Files Exploratory Committee Papers on Wed.

January 2, 2007

Romney will file paperwork for a presidential exploratory committee on Wednesday January 3, 2007 instead of Tuesday, out of respect for President Ford’s funeral. Senator McCain, former mayor Rudy Giuliani, and former Senator John Edwards have already established their committees. Registering allows candidates to raise and spend money for their presidential campaigns and requires them to commit to certain fundraising and reporting rules. See foxnews for more details.

Government Reform Ensures Nation’s Security

December 20, 2006

Mitt Romney’s most outstanding quality is his unbelievable success at turning around failing organizations and governments. However, Mitt’s perceived weakness is his lack of military experience. On the other hand, his primary opponent’s, Rudy Giuliani and John McCain, perceived strength seem to be their background with the military and war on Terror. I believe, however, that Mitt’s ability to pull smart people together to solve tough social problems and resurrect troubled organizations and governments is unmatchable and absolutely necessary to our national security.

If we continue to spend billions of dollars on the war in Iraq, Afghanistan, on our borders and else where, we need money. To get money we need to reform and reduce government spending. Programs like Social Security and Medicaid need to be overhauled. Moreover, one of the goals of the terrorist is to drain us financially. If they succeed, our economy will tank and our ability to fight the war on Terror will be minimized. Thus, by streamlining government programs and cutting waist, we can keep our economy strong and ensure that we have the resources necessary to fight the war on Terror.

Overall, I believe that reforming failing organizations and our government is essential to preserving a strong economy which will in turn give us the financial ability to fight the war on Terror. Giuliani and McCain simply do not have the skills or experience to reform our failing government. Clearly, Mitt’s the man for that job.
