According to CNN, “Sen. Joe Biden, D-Delaware, will formally add his name to the growing list of 2008 presidential candidates on Wednesday, a Biden aide tells CNN.”
“Biden — who first sought the Democratic nomination for president in 1988 — will skip the initial step of forming an exploratory committee and make a formal declaration of candidacy instead.”
“Biden, who as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has played a prominent role in the congressional debate over President Bush’s call for a troop increase in Iraq, plans to make his first public appearance as a presidential candidate at the Democratic National Committee’s winter meeting at the end of next week. …”
“Biden will become the fifth Democrat to formally declare his candidacy for president. Former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack, Rep. Dennis Kucinich, Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut, and Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards have all declared their candidacies.”
“Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York, Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson have established presidential exploratory committees but have yet to fully jump into the race.”

Even though Nancy Pelosi and John Kerry were for increasing troop levels in Iraq during the 2004 campaign, like many other Democrats they are now opposed to President Bush’s proposal to do so. In fact earlier this week Sen. Clinton stated that President Bush has it all backwards in Iraq and Afghanistan. She thinks we need to increase troop levels in Afghanistan and decrease (redeploy) them in Iraq. Furthermore, Sen. Clinton, Sen. Obama and other Democrats want to formally cap the level of troops in Iraq. Simply put, Sen. Obama called the idea of sending more troops to Iraq a tried and failed policy.” In addition, according to CNN, members of Congress (namely Biden-Levin-Hagel and Collins-Warner-Nelson) are drafting resolutions to show their disapproval of the President’s new plan. John Edwards and Tom Vilsack have taken it a step further and have called on Congress to cut funding and start removing troops now.
In an interview with CNN Sen. Clinton, I think, revealed why she and others so vehemently oppose the increase in troop levels. When asked whether she had faith in Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki she replied that “she doesn’t ‘have any faith’ in the embattled prime minister and questioned his motivations. ‘Whether there’s a gap between his intentions and his will and capacity is the real problem, or whether he’s doing what he intends to do to mark time and further the dominance of his sectarian supporters — it’s hard to tell.’”
On the other hand, “[s]peaking in support of a House bill proposing to prohibit Congress from cutting off funding for the Iraq war, Minority Whip Roy Blunt said Thursday critics of President Bush’s plan to increase troop levels in Iraq ‘don’t want to do what it takes to win.’ ‘Those who are not supporting the president’s current effort really have an obligation, in my view, to come up with their own plan and we’re not hearing that.’ ‘We’re seeing politicians in Washington who really want to have it both ways, they don’t want to support the current plan, but they don’t have a plan of their own.’ ‘They don’t want to lose, but they don’t want to do what it takes to win,’ he added.”
